Now, you might be wondering why a 2000+ year old game needs NFTs. It might sound odd at first, but it’s a fun way to introduce novelty without reinventing the wheel.

"Adding NFTs with quests incentivizes players to find new and bold strategies to maximize their rewards," Joseph Toaff, Content lead at IGE, shared with Rarible Blog. "Collecting a set of chess pieces with synergizing quests, or with quests that work well with a particular opening or endgame strategy, is another layer of entertainment IGE wants to offer its players."

Basically, Immortal Game lets you score cool NFTs and show off fancy chess pieces while improving your game and learning new strategies.

Another thing that’s important for Immortal Game — and blockchain gaming at large — is ownership. NFTs can give you true ownership over your in-game items and make them composable—while centralized players can simply shut down servers and make you unable to use the skins you paid good money for.

"We could have done this the Web2 way, where players buy in-game items with in-game currency purchased via credit card, but such a system would not give players full ownership of their purchase or the ability to trade with other players," Toaff said, adding:

Moreover, Immortal Game is meant to be free-to-play and play-and-earn, so we would have had to find a way to convert the in-game currency into fiat currency to reward players, with all the problems such a choice would imply.
